Third Sunday in Advent
Intent: Recognition of the Messenger

What is meant by the intent of this day? It is a wonderful message to meditate upon isn’t it? Why you may ask, well doesn’t everything begin with recognition? First the recognition of the deep longing we have in our hearts for Divine contact, and then the recognition that there is a solution to this deep yearning. Isn’t the first step to the fulfillment of this longing to simply recognize that it is the Divine Presence working in us, and to open our hearts to the many Messengers of the Light which have come in the past and that are all around us today?
The Light is not bound by one messenger nor by one person. It communicates to us every second of the day, inside of us, through creation, and through the people who surround us. It is in the beauty of the landscape, the smile of a child, and the speech of our loved ones. It is in their actions, in their compassion, in their love and in their hearts.
And though the readings for today are about the Christ and His Church, isn’t the Church of Christ the presence of the Light in all things and in all beings?
In the Gnostic Tradition we often refer to something called mystic hearing. But what is it to really listen? Isn’t it to see behind this world’s images and to recognize the countless blessings of God in our lives? Isn’t the answer to open our hearts and minds so that we can discern the Love of God working in all of creation and in our midst?
Let us therefore, as one Gnostic Community and One Universal Gnostic Church pray that we may truly listen, and by listening hear the voice of God amongst us leading us to salvation and to our lost home, the Holy Pleroma, that which is the destiny of all things. Let us open our hearts to the Divine presence in others, cherish it, care for it and above all recognize it. Amen.
