On Gnosticism
By Jules Doinel
The Gnosis is the essence of Christianity. This my dearly loved ones is the most just definition of Gnosticism….This Illuminating Gnosis is the pearl of the gospel for which Man, worthy of this name, must sell and give away everything he has. “My soul where do you come from? Saint Basil asked. Who charged you to carry this cadaver? If you are something celestial, O my soul, teach it to me.” The Gnosis answered: “It is by contemplating the Pleroma, that you will know all things.”
…the Gnosis is a complete and definitive synthesis of all the beliefs and ideas that humanity needs to understand its origins, its past, its destiny, its nature, its future, the contradictions of existence and the problems of life.
(From section V-VI of ‘Première Homélie,’ 1890)
