The Life of the Soul
By Jean Bricaud
From : La Vie de l’Âme, in « Le Spiritualisme moderne : revue des sciences morales », N° 8, 20 avril 1898.
The life of the soul is love.
Love says the Gospel. It is the word of Jesus, it was that of the Buddha, as it was that of Moses when both of theses said: “Love one another.” And “love thy neighbor as yourself.” Love infuses a new strength and a new life in souls through the means of Goodness.
It was the secret of the apostles, which conquered the world with a new ideal, without weapons, and simply because they shone with a splendor and an intensity of life cultivated by love.
There are three major paths toward God, corresponding to the three persons of the Holy Trinity, and Love is the path of the Holy-Spirit.
The ideal of each man should be to exalt this part in him in order to know pure love and become a Brother of the Light; for before love can reign on earth it must reign in each individual. Love conceived in this way allows us to enter into the Universal Church of which the External Church is but a vague reflection and how corrupt, indeed!
If we search to unite all men by loving them, it would be divine. Jesus explained it very well when he said the same thing: love thy neighbour or God. Let us therefore develop within us this love, and let us make of the earth by this fraternal union of all men; a Paradise!
But, if love surrounds us, it must be pure.
The Father the Son and the Holy Spirit lead to the Infinite Bliss (Beatitude), but each necessitates the Virgin which is Purity, an indispensable condition for the deification of man.
Love, a vestment, is nothing unless it contains within it Purity : soul.
This is how love must be. And the day it penetrates the hearts of all men, will be a day of triumph for the Christ of the Gospels, and of happiness for humanity. There will be happiness on the whole earth, for all who taste it will feel a joy without equal, as profound as their love is universal, they will live for others, all in unity, and it will be the true life of the soul.
