Fifteenth Sunday After Trinity
Intent: Brotherly Love
Today the Gnostic Church celebrates the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity and on this day we are reminded of the Divine encouragement to Love our neighbours as we would ourselves. One of the unique and beautiful things about Christianity is its radical sense of Love. A Love which should destroy all boundaries and prejudices between people. Many historians have argued that the growth of Christianity in its early days can be largely attributed to this universality and inclusiveness and that, unlike other religions, its mysteries were shared with all without regard to social status, class, race, nationality or gender. This radical egalitarianism with regards to the sacred mysteries was one of the essential features of the New Kingdom of God as taught and exemplified by Jesus as the Christ.
Unlike intolerant Christian Churches of the past and present, our Gnostic Church continues to have this central principle of Universal Love at its core. Long before it was done by other Churches, our Primats recognized the validity of the ordination of women and opened its Eucharist Service, not only to all Christians, but to all who freely accepted the Holy Sacrament.
Spiritually, Love is the very thing which allows the Light of the Divine to conquer the world. As the reading from the Gospel of Thomas says today: “Within a man of Light there is Light and he lights up the whole world. When he does not shine there is darkness. Jesus said: Love thy Brother as thy Soul, guard him as an apple in your eye.”
That Light is also the Light of Love.
Let us therefore pray today as one Gnostic Community, that in a time were intolerance is on the rise, that we may build bridges of Light and Love amongst all the nations and faiths of the world. May the transformative Love of the Aeon Christ live in all our hearts and minds and shine so brightly as to make our world a more peaceful place for the Spirit to live. Amen.
